Flowers are blooming, baby birds are chirping, and Portland is looking gorgeous! It must be another Pacific NW spring!

With spring there comes a time when it’s warm enough to fling open our windows and start using elbow grease to get rid of any wintertime dust balls. It seems like that time has come again! So, if you are ready to start spring cleaning, consider using this spring cleaning checklist:

General, Whole House Cleaning

  • Dust/clean ceiling and moldings
  • Replace any light bulbs that are out
  • Clean walls
  • Dust and clean all art
  • Dust and clean any ceiling fans
  • Clean windows inside and out
  • Dust furniture
  • Clean upholstery
  • Remove dark drapes, couch coverings, and throw pillow covers and replace with spring colors
  • Clean any blinds or drapes
  • Remove winter decorations or centerpieces and replace with fresh flowers or the spring theme of your choice
  • Clean floors
  • Polish hardwood
  • Shampoo carpets
  • Check smoke and carbon dioxide detectors
  • Change or clean any water, air conditioning or other filters
  • Empty and wash all trash cans

Entryway

  • Remove winter wear from entry way, shoe rack, and coat closet
  • Clean or replace doormat
  • Replace outdoor lighting that is out or add solar lighting lamps to the walkway
  • Dust the porch from top to bottom
  • If you have a covered porch, retrieve any outdoor furniture from storage, dust it and set it up

Kitchen

  • Dust and clean any hanging racks
  • Clean cupboards inside and out
  • Clean off spices – and throw away anything that has gone past its expiration date
  • Reorganize cupboards as needed
  • Clean refrigerator inside and out – throwing away anything that has gone past its expiration date
  • Clean oven inside and out
  • Unplug refrigerator and clean coils
  • Wipe down and clean any appliances
  • Clean dishwasher by cleaning out the food trap and running it while empty
  • Wipe down and clean drawers
  • Reorganize drawers as needed
  • Wash sink and faucets
  • Clear up any clogs as needed

Bathrooms

  • Recaulk any seals as needed
  • Dust vents and fans
  • Clean shower curtain and replace liner
  • Scrub shower and tub from walls down
  • Scrub toilet and all nooks and crannies in and around it
  • Check and replace toilet scrubber as needed
  • Wash cabinets inside and out
  • Throw away old prescriptions, expired medications, and unusable bath products
  • Wash sink and fixtures
  • Wash bathroom rugs
  • Clear up any clogs as needed

Closets

  • Reorganize/declutter closets
  • Donate old clothes or linens
  • Throw away any unusable or expired products
  • Throw away old/unused wire hangers

Outdoors

  • Clean windows
  • Do any recaulking needed
  • Clean walls and siding
  • Clean walkways and steps
  • Reseal driveway and decks
  • Bring out any outdoor furniture that is either waterproof or can be set up on a covered porch
  • Pull spring weeds
  • Plant any spring flowers or food plants
  • Clean planters and pots
  • Clean gutters and downspouts as needed

As you go through your spring cleaning, be sure to keep an eye out for any problem areas.
